Press Release from Bill Haslam Campaign for Governor, Feb. 10, 2010:
Mayor to Meet and Discuss Needs with Small Business Owners, Leaders
KNOXVILLE – Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam announced today his plans for a statewide jobs tour beginning March 10 in Middle Tennessee, intensifying his effort to identify promising practices and opportunities for private sector job creation.
The three-week tour will cover each of the state’s Grand Divisions and will include roundtable discussions with small businesses, tours of businesses and meetings with economic development professionals and business and community leaders across the state.
“My goal as the next governor is to make Tennessee the No. 1 state in the Southeast for high quality jobs,” said Haslam. “Tennessee is at a critical crossroads with many unique opportunities in front of it.
“If we’re to take full advantage of these opportunities and put Tennesseans back to work in good jobs, the state needs someone in charge who has been in charge before,” Haslam said.
“I’m looking forward to getting out and going business to business, town to town talking with owners about the obstacles and how I could serve them best as governor,” Haslam said.
Mayor Haslam is the gubernatorial candidate best prepared to lead the state on job creation. After a successful 20-year career in the private sector where he expanded business and helped create more than 11,000 jobs, Mayor Haslam led Knoxville to become one of the top ten cities in the country for job growth and expansion during a period of economic hardship.
“My experience as a business executive has been critical to my success as Mayor,” Haslam continued. “It’s helped me understand the needs of business leaders and small business owners, which has made me an effective executive for the city.”
“Bill’s entire career has been focused on jobs, and his campaign for governor has been about jobs from day one,” said Campaign Manager Mark Cate. “Mayor Haslam is out on the trail every week talking to people who are out of work and hearing from small business owners and employees. The Jobs Tour is a concentrated effort to identify local needs and solutions, lift up best practices and let on-the-ground concerns inform our policies.
“The Jobs Tour won’t be the end of our jobs focus either. Mayor Haslam will continue to listen to folks all across Tennessee, throughout the campaign and on into the governor’s office,” Cate said.
Tour dates and locations are to be announced.
As a two-term mayor, Haslam led Knoxville to become one of the top ten metropolitan areas for business and expansion while reducing the city’s debt, tripling the rainy day fund, and bringing property taxes to the lowest rate in 50 years.
