Press Release from McWherter for Tennessee Governor, Sept. 24, 2010:
Despite Questioning, Bill Haslam Refuses to Answer Simple Questions About His Big Oil Company
NASHVILLE – On Monday, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mike McWherter called on opponent Bill Haslam to answer a few basic questions concerning the nature of his business dealings and his persistent refusal to disclose his personal financial information. Despite repeated questioning from reporters and concern over possible conflicts of interest, Bill Haslam has consistently refused to answer.
“The voters of Tennessee deserve an open and transparent election.” said Mike McWherter. “I asked Bill a few simple questions 4 days ago and he has yet to give a straightforward answer, what is he hiding?”
At a press conference in downtown Nashville, Jackson businessman Mike McWherter called on Bill Haslam to have an honest dialogue with voters and answer the following questions:
1) Does CVC Capital own 47.5% of Pilot Travel Centers and are they equal governance partners?
2) Why is Pilot comfortable forming an equal partnership with a foreign investment group that has direct business ties in Iran?
So far, Mayor Haslam has avoided giving a direct answer, referring to the issue as “silly,” but has not actually addressed any of the questions posed by Mike McWherter.
“Voters in Tennessee have a right to an open, transparent government. Government is a two way street. If Haslam wants Tennessee voters to place their faith in him, then he should return the favor and open up,” added McWherter.
