Chattanooga Times Free Press reporter Andy Sher quoted Tennessee House Democratic Caucus Chairman Mike Turner saying his party’s heavy losses Tuesday resulted from simmering national anger directed toward President Obama and the Democratic Congress.
“It was just a backlash against Washington that we got caught up in,” Turner said.
Turner was among the survivors of election-day bloodletting, but barely. The Old Hickory firefighter just did manage to avoid becoming engulfed in the inferno of discontent himself, defeating Republican Charles Williamson by only 723 votes, according to the state election website.
Turner’s comments echo those of incumbent Cookeville Democrat Henry Fincher, who fell to the GOP’s Ryan Williams, 9,217 votes to 7455.
