Press Release from Governor-elect Bill Haslam; Dec. 12, 2010:
NASHVILLE – Tennessee Governor-elect Bill Haslam today announced former Bridgestone Americas CEO and President Mark Emkes as Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration.
Emkes spent his entire professional career at Bridgestone, working his way up from a trainee to chairman, CEO and president before retiring in February, 2010 after 33 years at the company. When he retired, Bridgestone Americas had annual revenues of $12 billion with 50,000 employees in North, Central and South America.
Much of his career took him overseas, including management positions in the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Brazil and Mexico.
The Department of Finance and Administration oversees the state’s budget and the administration of TennCare, and Emkes would essentially be the chief operating officer of the state.
“During the campaign I often made the point that state government is a large and complex organization, and I’m proud to announce someone of Mark’s caliber as a member of the team because we have some difficult challenges – and opportunities – ahead with the state budget,” Haslam said. “Mark has incredible experience all over the world, but more importantly, he is someone who has run a large and complex organization.”
Emkes has lived in Nashville since 2000 and serves on several boards in Middle Tennessee. He is past President of the Middle Tennessee Boy Scout Council and served as Chairman of the American Heart Association’s 2010 Nashville Heart Walk. He also serves as Co-Chair of the American Cancer Society’s CEOs Against Cancer, Tennessee Chapter.
“I have incredible respect for Governor-elect Haslam’s values and integrity, and I’m honored that he would ask me to serve with him,” Emkes said. “I’ve always admired people who serve others. I’m proud that I now have the opportunity to serve the governor and the people of Tennessee.”
He has a bachelor’s degree from DePauw University and an MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management.
Emkes, 57, is married to Conchi, and they have a son, Jonathan, and a daughter, Astrid. They are members of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Brentwood.
