Following the Governor’s Second State of the State Address to Joint Convention, Leaders Pledge Action on Governor’s Legislative Proposals
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Governor Bill Haslam tonight delivered his second State of the State Address outlining a conservative vision to continue transforming Tennessee government into a customer-friendly entity. A Joint Convention of the House and Senate welcomed the annual address from the Governor.
Following the address, House leaders offered their respective assessments of what the Governor told lawmakers.
“Tennesseans expect efficiency in state government and responsible budget management,” stated Speaker of the House Beth Harwell (R—Nashville) immediately after the speech. “In Tennessee, we balance our State’s budget. To ensure our economic outlook is bright, we are also aiming to provide tax relief for all Tennesseans. I look forward to discussing these proposals in the coming months.”
House Majority Leader Gerald McCormick (R—Chattanooga), who is traditionally tasked with moving the Governor’s legislative proposals, added, “Governor Haslam articulated a vision tonight that I truly believe will make Tennessee more competitive and will better serve the needs of all citizens. Whether it is balancing the budget or reforming how government operates, I am ready to guide these reforms through the Legislature.”
“Tonight was a very good night for Tennessee,” stated House Majority Caucus Chairwoman Debra Maggart (R—Hendersonville). “Yet again, our Governor revealed he has a talent for cutting waste and raising performance standards in government while increasing economic opportunity for all Tennesseans. His unique business background lets him know we cannot create jobs in government, but we can pave the way for better career opportunities in the private sector.”
