Press release from the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee; March 26, 2012:
When legislators finally realized that the “Don’t Say Gay” bill was bad for Tennessee, they decided to shift their energy instead to yet another bill that would legislate morality.
The “No Hand-Holding Bill,” up this week, requires sex education to “exclusively and emphatically” focus on abstinence, going so far as to say that schools will face stiff penalties for “implicitly or explicitly” promoting any “gateway sexual activity.”
Tell legislators teens need more information to make safe and healthy decisions about sex, not less.
The “No Hand-Holding Bill” is being promoted by rightwing religious groups such as the Eagle Forum of Tennessee and the Family Action Council of Tennessee.
Their focus on teaching abstinence ignores the reality of teens’ lives and censors vital information about prevention of unintended pregnancy and STDs, endangering teens’ health.
Urge lawmakers to put teen health and well-being before religious politics.
Research shows that comprehensive sex ed promotes healthy behaviors among teens, such as delaying sex, reducing the number of sexual partners and promoting use of contraception.
That’s why major medical groups such as the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists all support comprehensive sex ed.
Demand legislators oppose the “No Hand-Holding Bill” today.
