Nashville, TN– Michael Shane Baker, a former Lafollette Police officer and TBI Top 10 Most Wanted Fugitive turned himself in to authorities earlier today on numerous sexually related charges.
Baker, age 39, of 802 W. Jacksboro Road in New Tazewell, TN, was charged with 44 counts of Internet Sex Crimes with a child by a Campbell County Grand Jury on July 12, 2012. The charges consisted of Especially Aggravated Sexual Exploitation of a Minor and Solicitation of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor. The alleged offenses occurred September – December 2011. Baker’s bond was pre-set at $100,000.00.
Baker became aware of the investigation and as a result hid from law enforcement to avoid apprehension. TBI began the fugitive investigation at the request of District Attorney General Paul Phillips. Baker was placed on TBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted Program on July 19.
On Monday October 1st, the Claiborne County Sheriff Department received a call from Baker who stated he was tired of running and wanted to turn himself in. Claiborne County Deputies went to Baker’s mother’s home and took him into custody.
Other agencies involved in the fugitive investigation include the Lafollette PD, the Union County, Grainger County and Campbell County Sheriff’s Departments.
