Press Release from the Tennessee Democratic Party, Jan 15, 2014:
STATE DEMOCRATIC CHAIR TELLS REPUBLICAN POLITICIANS “PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH” AND GIVE UP THEIR GOVERNMENT HEALTH INSURANCE
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee Democratic Chair Roy Herron today called on Republican legislators seeking to block Tennesseans from getting health insurance through the Affordable Care Act to “practice what they preach.”
“Some Republican politicians want to block working Tennesseans from having what those same politicians have: government-provided health insurance. They ought to ‘practice what they preach’ and surrender their own government health insurance if they’re going to stop working families from being insured.
“If the politicians and the prisoners, the lawmakers and the lawbreakers have government-funded health care, why shouldn’t working men and women have some help, too?” Herron demanded.
Herron pointed out that anti-Affordable Care Act legislation sponsor Senator Mae Beavers has had government health insurance was elected to the General Assembly twenty years ago this year.
“Senator Beavers has had government health insurance for two decades, but she doesn’t want working Tennesseans to have what she has, not even for two minutes,” Herron said.
“These Republican politicians take government health insurance for themselves and deny it for their constituents. If Republican politicians are going to keep other people’s families from having health insurance, in fairness to the 36,000 who would lose their insurance and the 330,000 more Republicans are denying Medicaid coverage the Republican sponsors should surrender their own taxpayer-funded health insurance.”
