Press Release from the Democratic Party of the State of Tennessee, April 25, 2014:
Herron: “Taxpayers and workers deserve the truth.”
NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Roy Herron is calling for an investigation into the Haslam administration’s withdrawal of its secret $300 million offer to Volkswagen in light of new documents that contradict previous administration statements.
E-mails from Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development officials to Volkswagen leaders were uncovered yesterday by a Nashville television station (Channel 5). These latest e-mails show that, contrary to previous administration claims that the offer was pulled because Volkswagen failed to meet a deadline, the Republican administration in fact rescinded the offer unilaterally, making no reference to a 90-day deadline previously alleged.
“These e-mails reveal that there was no deadline, and the administration’s previous statements were at best misleading and perhaps outright falsehoods,” Herron said. “It is now clear the administration held over 1,000 Tennessee jobs hostage for political reasons. The Haslam administration is stonewalling and refusing to answer reporters’ questions, but taxpayers and workers deserve the truth. Lieutenant Governor Ramsey and Speaker Harwell should immediately have legislative committees conduct a full investigation to get the truth.”
