Press Release from Brandon Puttbrese for State Senate, June 13, 2014:
‘We Fight For Equality, Not Against It’
Democratic State Senate Candidate Brandon Puttbrese Marks Beginning of Nashville PRIDE
NASHVILLE – State Senate candidate Brandon Puttbrese issued a statement Friday in support of Nashville PRIDE:
This weekend, we stand with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Tennesseans in celebrating Nashville PRIDE and Pride Month, which commemorates the 1969 Stonewall riots and the progress we are making toward full LGBT equality.
I believe we at our best when we fight for equality, not against it. From marriage to protections from discrimination in the workplace, I have long believed that LGBT Tennesseans deserve the same treatment and protections that straight Tennesseans already enjoy.
While progress toward LGBT equality has accelerated in America, there is still plenty of work to do in Tennessee to ensure that every Nashville family is treated equally under the law.
The choice in this state senate election is clear. I will fight for equality for all Tennesseans while Thelma Harper has supported inequality and discrimination. Harper voted to write discrimination and inequality into the state Constitution, and she turned her back on committed LGBT couples seeking the same rights as straight couples.
On this and many other issues, Harper has taken us in the wrong direction.
It’s time for new energy and a new direction for Nashville families. A direction driven by our shared fight for equality — in economic opportunity, education, health care, and, of course, equality under the law for LGBT families.
