Press release from the Tennessee Republican Party, May 28, 2015:

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—A special moment will take place this Saturday during the Tennessee Republican Party’s 2015 Statesmen’s Dinner.

The TNGOP will recognize Mr. Jim Haslam for all of the incredible work and service he has given the Party by presenting him with the Howard H. Baker Award.

The Baker Award is given to individuals who exemplify the personal principles of service, honor, and integrity of the late U.S. Senator from Tennessee. Haslam, the father of Governor Bill Haslam, has been a long-time supporter of the Tennessee Republican Party and countless Republican candidates around the state and nation.

Haslam was nominated for the award by U.S. Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker. Sen. Alexander will personally present the award to Mr. Haslam following remarks by both he and Sen. Corker.

Alexander stated, “Jim Haslam was Howard Baker’s Knox County finance chairman in 1964, when Howard Baker first tried to become the first popularly elected Republican senator in Tennessee history. No Tennessean has done as much to help Tennessee Republican candidates at every level. He has been unselfish and generous and has never asked for anything for himself other than an honest effort at good government.”

“I cannot think of a person more deserving of the Howard H. Baker Award than Jim Haslam,” remarked Corker. “From the way he has raised his family, to the way he has given generously to his community, our party, our state, and our country, Mr. Haslam is the model of an effective leader and has set an example of service that is second to none. I am the beneficiary of his counsel, example, and friendship, and I could not be more proud to honor him in this way on Saturday.”

Tennessee Republican Party Chairman Ryan Haynes stated, “So much of what Mr. Haslam has done to help Tennessee is reminiscent of all that Senator Baker did. He truly epitomizes the spirit of the Statesmen’s Dinner, and the work and support he has provided does not go unnoticed. But we would not have reached these heights of success without him. I’m proud we will be honoring Mr. Haslam for his remarkable service this Saturday.”

Background

Last year, the Baker Award was given to Ted Welch.
