One of the state’s top Republicans says he’s unsure of Chairman Curry Todd’s political future given his DUI arrest Tuesday night.
“Well, I think it’s too early to really know if he’s going to keep his chairmanship,” said Rep. Gerald McCormick, the House Republican leader. “He’s done a good job, and I certainly hope so. We’re not going to make any rash decisions until we have a detailed conversation with him and also with the speaker of the House who actually makes those appointments.”
Those kinds of decisions will be made once Speaker Beth Harwell returns next week from an out of town trip with her daughter, said McCormick.
Todd, a Collierville Republican, was the sponsor of a move that let permitted handgun owners take firearms with them into bars and restaurants that serve alcohol. He himself had a loaded gun with him when he was arrested for drunk driving Tuesday, according to a police affidavit.
The arresting officer’s statement indicated that Todd was “extremely unsteady on his feet” and that he was “almost falling down at times.” The officer observed Todd was “obviously very impaired and not in any condition to be carrying a loaded handgun.”
