Todd Gardenhire was one of the members of the Senate Health Committee who voted to kill Gov. Bill Haslam’s Medicaid expansion plan during the General Assembly’s special session last month.
The Chattanooga Republican has since been targeted by groups protesting his decision. There’s little indication, though, that he’s changed his mind.
Gardenhire will be among the members of the Senate Commerce Committee who will potentially decide if “Insure Tennessee” lives or dies this week. He indicated to reporters on March 26 that he’s in fact heard little to change his mind since early February.
He still worries there’s no guarantee in writing from the hospitals that they will cover the state’s costs of administering the program going forward — and he noted that the bill now has a fiscal note relating to that issue. Gardenhire also said it seems that the number of Tennesseans who’ll be covered under “Insure Tennessee” keeps shifting.
