Democratic state Reps. G.A. Hardaway and Johnnie Turner, both of Memphis, discuss their agreed-upon view that the Tennessee House Democratic Caucus needs black leadership. This interview was conducted in Nashville on Nov. 14. The former caucus chairman, Rep. Mike Turner of Old Hickory, who is white, retired from the Legislature this year. Hardaway said he’s certain there will be a push for more racial and gender diversity when the caucus meets for caucus elections in December.
Republicans outnumber Democrats in the House, 73-26. Going forward, Hardaway would like to see the Democratic superminority “more engaged on the grassroots level.”
