Sen. Doug Henry, D-Nashville, says the two most important issues to him during the 2013-14 session of the Tennessee Legislature are making sure state government funds the initiatives it passes and ensuring that the state’s retirement system stays solvent. Henry is the longest serving member of the Tennessee Legislature. He was first elected to the state House of Representatives in 1954. He has served in the Tennessee Senate since 1970. He told TNReport in this Jan. 9 interview that he thinks Republicans have at times over the past couple years veered into areas that were nonessential to the operation of government. However, Henry lauded the job Gov. Bill Haslam has done since taking office in January 2011.
