Rep. Mike Stewart sees no reason the state constitution should be amended to explicitly forbid the Legislature or local governments from enacting taxes on Tennesseans’ work-earnings. The Nashville Democrat said he opposes the “No State Income Tax” resolution that the General Assembly has passed and sent to the voters. Stewart says that while he doesn’t see any present need or current political desire for an income tax, there should be few restrictions on the Legislature’s ability to impose whatever revenue-generating mechanisms it chooses.
