NASHVILLE – Governor-elect Bill Haslam today named Herbert Slatery as Legal Counsel to the Governor. Slatery currently serves as Chairman of the Knoxville firm Egerton, McAfee, Armistead & Davis.
As Legal Counsel, a position Haslam will designate Cabinet-level, Slatery will oversee legal matters pertaining to the Governor and his administration and serve as a trusted adviser to Haslam on other issues.
“Herbert is a talented lawyer who clients rely on not just for legal advice but also for help in making strategic business decisions,” Haslam said. “I value his integrity and judgment, and look forward to him serving the state in this important role.”
Slatery, a business transaction lawyer, has practiced with Egerton McAfee for 30 years, representing a broad-based client list including both private businesses and local government organizations. He was named Counsel for The H.T. Hackney Co., a large private wholesale grocery company. He also served as the Chairman and Director of the Public Building Authority of the County of Knox and City of Knoxville.
“Herbert has gained expertise in a wide range of areas, giving him a thorough understanding of the regulatory challenges facing businesses, state and local governments and taxpayers in Tennessee,” Stephen McSween, President of Egerton McAfee said. “Although we will greatly miss Herbert during his leave of absence from our firm, we understand that our loss in the interim is Tennessee’s gain.”

Slatery is a graduate of the University of Virginia and holds a doctor of jurisprudence from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is a member of the Knoxville, Tennessee and American Bar Associations, a member of the American College of Mortgage Attorneys and a fellow of the Knoxville Bar Foundation.
