Citizen Action To ID ‘Real Villains’ Attacking Middle Class, Examine Solutions

Press Release from Tennessee Citizen Action; July 14, 2011:

House meeting is one of more than 1,500 nationwide taking place this weekend

[Nashville, TN] – Remember when teachers, public employees, Planned Parenthood, NPR, and PBS crashed the stock market, wiped out half of our 401Ks, took trillions in taxpayer-funded bail outs, spilled oil in the Gulf of Mexico, gave themselves billions in bonuses, and paid no taxes?

Neither do we.

This weekend, Tennessee Citizen Action will join activists across the country in hosting more than 1,500 “house meetings” that will focus on rebuilding the hopes and dreams of America’s middle class.

The meetings, organized locally by volunteer activists and coordinated nationally by groups such as MoveOn, Center for Community Change and USAction, are an opportunity to identify the real villains behind the attacks on America’s middle class and find and discuss solutions, including actions people can take locally and nationally.

Tennessee Citizen Action will host a house meeting at 3:00 pm on Saturday, July 16, at the Z. Alexander Looby Library branch in Nashville. The event is open to the media. To RSVP, please contact Mary Mancini at 615-480-4678.

“We need to rebuild the hopes and dreams of the middle class,” said Mancini. “There is a new sense of energy and urgency across the country – communities are under attack but we are fighting back. People are standing up to protect our families and our future.”

The house meeting in Nashville, like the more than 1,500 house meetings taking place in all 435 congressional districts in the United States, will offer local residents an opportunity to share their stories, fears, hopes and ideas. “We will gather at homes, church basements, and community centers across America,” Mancini said. “We will discuss not just what a new American Dream looks like, but how we get there. Together, we will create a new movement to make a new American Dream not just a dream but a reality.”

Tennessee Citizen Action believes we can rebuild the middle class through robust job creation, requiring corporations and the wealthiest Americans to pay their fair share of taxes and responsible cuts to wasteful Pentagon spending. Tennessee Citizen Action organizes for democracy, for power and for change to create a more just Tennessee and a more just America.
