Press Release from the Senate Democratic Caucus, April 8, 2014:
Senate Democratic Leader marks Equal Pay Day 2014
NASHVILLE – Today marks Equal Pay Day 2014, marking the number of days this year women will have to work extra to earn the same as their male counterparts.
“It is hard to believe that in 2014 women still earn less than men for the same work,” Sen. Jim Kyle said. “A woman is paid 77 cents for every dollar a man is paid for the same job. We have to do better than that.”
Sen. Kyle sponsored a measure last month that would have guaranteed women in state employment earn as much as male state employees. The measure failed by a vote of 8-13, with several Republicans refusing to vote.
“A majority of Tennesseans believe women deserve the same opportunities to earn a living as men,” Sen. Kyle said. “Unfortunately, that’s not the majority view in the Tennessee state Senate.”
