Press release from the Tennessee Republican Party; October 30, 2014:
NASHVILLE, Tenn.–Tennessee Republican Party Chairman Chris Devaney released the following statement after Democrat Bo Mitchell’s (D–Nashville) press conference that amounted to little more than a political stunt:
“When you’re losing, you lash out. Democrat Bo Mitchell is proving this bit of political wisdom correct once again.”
“Republicans and Independents are voting against Mitchell. Why? Because they are tired of his political games, his ineffective record, and his disturbing ties to Barry Stokes, the mastermind of one of the most destructive Ponzi schemes in Tennessee history.
“Today’s political stunt is classic misdirection from him. It was meant to deflect from the fact Republicans are strongly opposing Democrat Bo Mitchell. He fabricates an association between our Republican nominee and an education reform group, yet cries foul when it’s pointed out he has a disturbing association with a man who swindled $19 million from unsuspecting victims. That’s blatant hypocrisy and we expect voters will see right through it.”
- The TNGOP previously sent out a release detailing Mitchell’s ties to Barry Stokes and his attempt to get $40,000 in post-employment commission money from the bankrupt Ponzi scheme company while victims were trying to salvage anything they could from their accounts.
- A 2008 Nashville City Paper article highlighted Mitchell’s association with Stokes–two years after the Ponzi scheme became public.
- Stokes pled guilty to multiple counts of fraud and embezzlement for stealing over $19 million from unsuspecting victims.
- In another court filing, Mitchell showed he removed approximately $11,000 from his 1Point Solutions retirement account and lost zero dollars, and provides documentation and a personal note confirming as much.
