Consumer group names Harris legislator of the year

MEMPHIS – Senate Minority Leader Lee Harris was recognized as legislator of the year by the Tennessee Mental Health Consumers’ Association.

“I am grateful to the Tennessee Mental Health Consumers’ Association for this special honor,” Sen. Harris said. “Mental health illnesses affect hundreds of thousands of Tennessee adults and tens of thousands of Tennessee children.

“In particular, substance abuse and other conditions have been difficult and persistent challenges in Shelby County. We all know, work or love someone who deals with mental illness. We need more intervention, more resources to getting folks healthy, and more groups like the TMHCA.”

Sen. Harris was chosen for his outstanding leadership and support of initiatives that benefit mental health consumers, said Kellye Hammond, statewide consumer support director for TMHCA.

The award will be presented May 14 TMHCA’s annual conference at the Manchester Coffee County Convention Center in Manchester, Tenn.
