Boyd Names New as Assistant Commissioner of Rural Development

Press release from the Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development; February 19, 2015:

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Economic and Community Development Commissioner Randy Boyd announced today the appointment of Amy New as the department’s first Assistant Commissioner for Rural Development.

New, a department veteran working with business and community development programs, most recently served as director of the department’s primary community development program ThreeStar.

Boyd said New would lead a new division within TNECD that reorganizes all community programs under her leadership. The move will allow the department to put a greater emphasis on assisting rural communities.

“While TNECD has done many good things for our rural communities, from the ThreeStar program to the Select Tennessee site development efforts, I believe we need to double down on our efforts,” Boyd said. “Many of our rural areas are still struggling, and we need to reorganize and align to serve them even better. That includes considering new programs, improving existing ones, and reallocating resources, both personnel and financial.  However, the most important first step is to put in place a great leader, and I believe Amy New is that leader. She has the experience, the passion and the leadership ability to move our state forward.”

Since 2012, as ThreeStar Director, New worked to restructure and expand Tennessee’s community development efforts by launching a more focused activity based program, with incentives and grant monies. The reconstituted ThreeStar focuses on five key areas critical to ensuring the success of Tennessee communities: Jobs & Economic Development, Fiscal Strength & Efficient Government, Public Safety, Education & Workforce Development, and Health & Welfare.

“Amy was raised in rural Tennessee and understands our challenges and opportunities,” Boyd said.  “Amy’s leadership abilities, relationships and grasp of rural policy will allow us to up our game on behalf of rural communities.”

A native of Monterey, Tenn., New worked at both the county government and chamber level, was a Business Profiles host with WCTE-TV and an account executive with MMA Creative prior to her work with TNECD.

“When our communities engage actively in community development to improve their quality of life, education, workforce and overall health they are building a foundation for economic development,” New said. “The private sector will only invest in communities that first invest in themselves.  We will use the opportunity to proactively work with partner agencies and our communities to attract investment and jobs to rural Tennessee.”

Boyd also announced the hiring of Jody Sliger as TNECD’s new ThreeStar director.

Sliger was most recently the interim president and tourism and marketing director of the Sparta-White County Chamber of Commerce. Prior to that Sliger was a journalist in the Upper Cumberland region, including as lifestyles editor of The Expositer newspaper in Sparta.

The brand will initially open in a temporary location, with plans to build out a permanent space in the near future. As part of the expansion, Warby Parker will create more than 250 new jobs in Davidson County over the next five years.

“We want to thank Warby Parker for investing in Tennessee and creating these high quality jobs in Nashville,” Haslam said. “Tennessee’s central geographic location and strong creative class makes us a natural fit for a design company like Warby Parker, and today’s announcement is another step toward our goal of becoming the No. 1 location in the Southeast for high quality jobs.”

“Tennessee continues to set itself apart as a state where companies can feel confident in leveraging new investment,” Hagerty said. “Warby Parker is another example of a cutting edge brand deciding to locate in Tennessee, taking advantage of our low cost of living, ideal, central location, and creative and talented workforce pool. I appreciate these new jobs they are creating in our communities and look forward to their continued presence in our state.”

The Nashville office marks the first time Warby Parker will expand its corporate team outside of its New York City headquarters. The company’s commitment to providing incredible customer experiences means hiring and housing a large, talented team outside of the 300-plus employees who currently work in New York City.

“Nashville is such a vibrant city—we’re thrilled to put down roots there,” Neil Blumenthal, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Warby Parker, said. “We will continue to expand our New York headquarters, but this is an exciting next step that will allow us to fuel future company and customer growth.”

“We’re constantly seeking ways to build closer relationships with our customers,” Dave Gilboa, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Warby Parker, said. “Opening an office in Nashville will allow us to do just that as we expand our Customer Experience team, tap into a talented local workforce, reach customers from a different time zone and build a presence in a really dynamic and culturally interesting city.”

Warby Parker is an online-native brand that has now expanded to include six free-standing retail locations around the country, and eight showrooms, including one in Nashville at Imogene and Willie, located on 12th Avenue South. The new Nashville office will focus first on hiring employees for its Customer Experience team, with the possibility of adding team members to other departments in the future.

“Nashville is known the world over as a center for creative talent, and fast-growing companies like Warby Parker understandably are attracted to the innovation and creative culture in our city,” Nashville Mayor Karl Dean said. “I thank Warby Parker for their investment in Nashville, which further demonstrates the vibrancy of our city, the strength of our workforce, the low cost of doing business here and the area’s high quality of life.”

“TVA and NES congratulate Warby Parker on its decision to locate operations in Nashville, Tennessee,” TVA Senior Vice President of Economic Development John Bradley said. “We are proud to be partners with the state of Tennessee, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County to support companies like Warby Parker that locate, add new jobs and continue to grow in Nashville.”

Warby Parker is a transformative lifestyle brand with a lofty goal: to offer designer eyewear at a revolutionary price while leading the way for socially-conscious businesses. Founded in 2010 by friends Neil Blumenthal, Dave Gilboa, Andy Hunt and Jeff Raider, the company seeks to radically transform the optical industry while demonstrating that companies can do good in the world, scale, and make a profit without charging a premium for it. Warby Parker designs their glasses in-house, cutting out middlemen and unnecessary markups, while providing their customers a world-class purchasing experience. Eyewear starts at $95, and for every pair sold, a pair is distributed to someone in need through their Buy a Pair, Give a Pair program. To date, Warby Parker has distributed over 1 million pairs of glasses globally to people in need.

The company expects to be operational in Nashville by mid-October of this year and plans to begin hiring immediately. People interested in applying for a role on Warby Parker’s Customer Experience team can visit www.warbyparker.com/jobs.

Haslam Announces Rough Country Relocation, 200 Job Expansion

Press release from the Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development; June 30, 2014:

Premium Suspension Products Manufacturer to Invest $1.5 Million, Forecasts 200 New Jobs

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bill Hagerty along with Rough Country Suspension Systems officials announced today the company will relocate its distribution operations to a 250,000 square foot facility in Newbern. Headquartered in Dyersburg, the expansion will allow Rough Country to more than double the size of its workforce as well as its Dyer County footprint. With a goal of being fully operational by late August, Rough Country’s plans include investment of $1.5 million and the creation of up to 200 new jobs over the next five years.

“I want to congratulate Rough Country on this expansion in Dyer County and thank the company for the new jobs that will be created for Tennesseans,” Haslam said. “We leverage our state’s assets to create an environment that allows companies to grow and expand, and today’s announcement supports our goal to make Tennessee the No. 1 location in the Southeast for high quality jobs.”

Rough Country designs, produces, markets and distributes premium suspension products for trucks, Jeeps and SUVs. All distribution operations, including international, will be managed out of the Newbern facility.

“Our state’s superior transportation and logistics infrastructure make it possible for companies to distribute quality Tennessee-made products to locations throughout the world,” Hagerty said. “Tennessee’s export shipments totaled more than $30 billion last year, and we credit companies like Rough Country for thinking beyond the borders of our state. I appreciate Rough Country’s continued investment and the new jobs that will be created in Dyer County.”

Founded in 1988, Rough Country has significantly expanded its product offering and customer base over the last five years requiring additional production and warehouse space to meet its service expectations. The Newbern facility will house Rough Country’s primary packaging and assembly operation as well as its primary distribution point for finished goods inventory. From this location, Rough Country will support other warehouse operations including its industry-leading same day shipping offering.

“We are thrilled with the team that has been assembled here in Dyer County, and excited by the opportunities we see for Rough Country and our market going forward,” Rough Country CEO Ken Dunn said. “We’ve been blessed to add jobs each year at Rough Country and the expansion in Newbern is a reflection of our confidence in the local workforce and our commitment to the area.”

“We are so fortunate Rough Country Suspension Systems has chosen Newbern as the area to expand its business. Rough Country has a long history of manufacturing and distributing the finest products for the automotive and off-road industries,” Newbern Mayor Olen Parker said. “When it comes to off-road drivers, there is one name that is superior and that name is Rough Country Suspension Systems. Not only do they bring superior products, they bring an exceptional workforce to our community. This type of industrial growth is only achieved when local, regional and state organizations get behind a company and support them in their efforts. Rough Country believes in its products, and the city of Newbern will do everything possible to ensure Rough Country continues to succeed. We are proud to welcome Rough Country to our community and family of industries.”

“TVA congratulates Rough Country Suspension Systems on their expansion which brings new jobs in the Newbern area,” John Bradley, TVA senior vice president of Economic Development, said. “TVA and Newbern Electric Water & Gas are glad to be economic development partners with the state of Tennessee, Dyer County, and other community leaders to help existing companies grow.”’

Facility investments will include new equipment related to packaging and assembly lines. With additional growth, the continued investments in automated processes and quality improvements are included in Rough Country’s forecast.
