State builds on trend of delivering award-winning digital services to citizens

NASHVILLE – The State of Tennessee’s official website,, has been named the best state website in the country in the annual “Best of the Web” competition sponsored by the Center for Digital Government.

“With more Tennesseans going online to do business with the state, we understand that there is growing demand for mobile access to state services,” Gov. Bill Haslam said. “As we continue to look for ways to make state government more customer-focused, efficient and effective, we are grateful for this recognition that supports those efforts online.”

Recently redesigned, was optimized for a range of screen sizes – from monitors to tablets to phones – to provide easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling. Support for retina displays, swipe gestures on rotators and collapsing menus are just a few of the ways the site has been enhanced to improve the user experience and better interact with visitors.

Since 2011, the State of Tennessee has been increasingly recognized as a leader in using technology to better serve Tennesseans and streamline operations. In addition to the state’s 2013 Best of the Web win, the Tennessee Department of Transportation was awarded a Digital Government Achievement Award for its innovative SmartWay Mobile application available on iOS and Android devices.

Less than a year ago, the state was awarded an “A-” in the biennial Digital States Survey and recognized with another Digital Government Achievement Award for the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security’s iPad kiosk app for driver license renewals.

The redesign was completed through a unique partnership with Nashville-based NICUSA Tennessee, part of the eGovernment firm NIC’s family of companies.

Guv’s Highway Safety Office Launches New Website

NASHVILLE, TN– The Governor’s Highway Safety Office in partnership with the Tennessee Tech University College of Business, Business Media Center launched its new website today. The greatly enhanced website will be the communication hub for news and information relating to Tennessee highway safety.

“Our website will be the identity of the Governor’s Highway Safety Office,” Kendell Poole, Director said. “The site will be easily accessible to our law enforcement safety partners and the public, and offer an abundance of information and statistics on highway safety.”

The new website will increase awareness of the traffic safety initiatives and innovative programs that GHSO is providing across the state. It is also designed to engage the public on highway safety issues that affect every Tennessean.

Dr. Kevin Liska, Director of the Business Media Center at TTU, and his innovative team have been working on the creation of the website for several months. “We are excited about implementing systems that reach the thousands of Tennessee public safety stakeholders committed to the GHSO vision of helping all arrive safely at their destination, making Tennessee highways safer every day,” Liska said.

The website will be the catalyst for law enforcement training offered through GHSO. It will provide the interface for law enforcement agencies to report data on National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaigns they are conducting in their communities. The website will serve as a resource for any individual to find a traffic safety expert in their area.

The website will also display GHSO grantees and the work they are doing across the state to implement positive change in their communities.

“We will continue to do our part to keep the people of this great state safe when traveling on our highways,” Poole said. “Our goal is to make sure you and your loved ones arrive safely at your destinations. We will make every effort to ensure driver safety.”

TN Charter Schools Association Launches New Website

Today, the Tennessee Charter Schools Association is excited to launch our NEW WEBSITE with resources including a map with information on all of the state’s charter schools, a new weekly blog, research, charter school FAQs, and TCSA’s role in promoting a quality charter school movement.

Clicking on topics provides visitors with suggestions on related topics to make finding information easier and more intuitive. uses GeoIP technology to identify a visitor’s location so city, presenting city and county government information and up-to-date local news and interactive mapping to help visitors find points of interest like schools, libraries, and state parks and historic sites. Prominently displayed links to social media, RSS, and other rich media and a new mobile-optimized site make it easy for visitors to connect with state government using the latest technologies.

A new public participation feature will help increase government transparency by creating a single location for public participation opportunities that is featured on the home page. This new service makes it easy for visitors to quickly find information about upcoming meetings and download it to their personal calendar. supports an average of 1.6 million unique users per month and offers hundreds of user-friendly digital government services that help constituents interact more effectively with the state, including driver license renewal, background checks, professional license renewal and tax filing services.
